Starboard Guide

Highlight popular Discord messages in a dedicated channel with configurable star thresholds and exclusions.

A practical walkthrough

5 min read · Updated Jul 21, 2026

The Starboard copies a message into a highlight channel when it receives enough ⭐ reactions. The copied post includes the original author and a link back to the source message.

Starboard is configured through the Settings module, but it has its own workflow and troubleshooting steps.

Features

  • Choose one text or announcement channel for highlighted posts.
  • Set a threshold from 2 to 999 stars.
  • Ignore up to 25 text or announcement channels.
  • Highlight text, image attachments, other attachments, and the first embed on a message.
  • Link every starboard post back to the original message.
  • Configure the same options from Discord or Dashboard → Settings.

Before You Begin

You need Manage Server to configure Starboard. Discortics needs View Channel, Send Messages, and Embed Links in the starboard channel. The settings command also requires Read Message History.

Members must react with the standard ⭐ emoji. Custom star emojis do not trigger this feature. Reactions from bots are ignored.

Create Your Starboard

  1. Create a channel such as #starboard.
  2. Give Discortics View Channel, Send Messages, and Embed Links in that channel.
  3. Run /settings starboard.
  4. Select Channel and choose the starboard channel. Selecting a channel also enables Starboard.
  5. Select Threshold.
  6. Send a whole number from 2 to 999 within 60 seconds.
  7. Add ignored channels if needed.
  8. Check that the status button shows Starboard as enabled.

Every change saves immediately. There is no separate save command in Discord.

Options Explained

Enable or Disable

The first button turns Starboard on or off. Disabling it keeps the channel, threshold, and ignored-channel list for later.

Starboard cannot post unless a destination channel is configured, even when the status is enabled.

Channel

The text or announcement channel where highlighted messages are posted. Staff often make this channel read-only so only Discortics can post in it.

Changing the channel affects future highlights. It does not move posts already sent to the old channel.

Threshold

The number of ⭐ reactions required before Discortics copies the message. The default is 3. Valid values are 2 through 999.

  • Use a low threshold for small or quiet servers.
  • Use a higher threshold for large or active servers.
  • Type cancel when the command asks for a number if you do not want to save a change.

Discortics waits up to 60 seconds for the threshold response and attempts to delete that response afterward.

Ignored Channels

Messages in ignored channels never reach Starboard. Use this for staff rooms, private discussions, bot channels, or channels with sensitive content.

Select Add Ignored to add one or more channels. Discord allows up to 25 selections. Existing entries remain when you add more.

Select Clear Ignored to remove the complete ignored-channel list. There is no button to remove only one ignored channel from the Discord panel. Use Dashboard → Settings when you need to edit the list directly.

Reset

Reset removes the complete Starboard configuration after confirmation. The status returns to disabled, the threshold returns to 3, and the channel and ignored list are cleared.

Warning: Reset cannot be undone. Existing starboard posts remain in Discord, but Discortics forgets the configuration.

What Gets Posted

When a message first reaches the threshold, Discortics posts one highlight:

  • Text messages include their content, author, star count, and original-message link.
  • Image attachments are reposted with the author and original-message link.
  • Messages containing embeds use the first embed.
  • Other attachments are linked from a generated embed.

Discortics posts only when the message crosses the threshold. Extra stars do not create another post or update the copied star count.

Dashboard

Open Dashboard → Settings → Starboard to configure:

  • Enabled status
  • Destination channel
  • Threshold
  • Ignored channels

The Dashboard limits ignored channels to 25 and requires a channel before Starboard can be enabled. Use the save bar to apply changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did a message not appear after reaching the threshold?

Check that Starboard is enabled, a channel is selected, and the source channel is not ignored. Confirm that members used the standard ⭐ emoji and that Discortics can view and post in the destination channel.

Starboard also needs the original message in its message cache. A message created before the current bot session or unavailable to the bot may not be highlighted.

Can I use a custom emoji instead of ⭐?

No. Starboard currently responds only to the standard ⭐ emoji.

Does removing stars remove the Starboard post?

No. Starboard reacts when a message first reaches the threshold. It does not remove or update the copied post when reactions later change.

Can one message be posted more than once?

No. It is posted only when it first crosses the configured threshold.

Can I exclude a category?

Not directly. Add each text or announcement channel in that category to the ignored list.

Does Starboard have tier limits?

No Public, Prime, or Custom capacity difference is configured for Starboard. Discord's 25-item select limit applies to ignored channels.
