Levels Module

Reward messages and voice activity with separate XP tracks, level-up roles, and rank cards.

A practical walkthrough

8 min read · Updated Jul 21, 2026

The Levels module rewards member activity with XP. Message XP and voice XP are separate tracks, so a member can have a different level and reward path for each one.

Configure Levels from Discord with /xp config. Members can check either their own progress or another member's progress with /rank.

Features

  • Award XP for qualifying messages.
  • Award XP for completed eligible minutes in voice channels.
  • Keep separate message and voice levels, XP, rewards, and announcements.
  • Give roles when a member reaches selected levels.
  • Increase or reduce message XP for selected roles or channels.
  • Exclude users, roles, and channels from all XP earning.
  • Send level-up announcements to a channel, the active channel, or DMs.
  • View a two-track rank card with /rank.
  • Set or reset one member's XP as an administrator.

Before You Begin

Staff need the Administrator permission to open /xp config or use /xp set and /xp reset.

Discortics needs Send Messages and Embed Links for the configuration menu and level-up announcements. It needs Attach Files for /rank.

For role rewards, Discortics also needs Manage Roles. Its highest role must be above every reward role. Managed integration roles cannot be used as rewards.

Both XP tracks start disabled. No one earns XP until you enable at least one track.

Levels Limits

Limits depend on which Discortics bot serves your server. Each limit applies separately to each listed group. For example, a server may have up to 10 message rewards and 10 voice rewards on the Public bot.

Role rewards per track101525
Ignored users51020
Ignored roles51020
Ignored channels51020
Role multipliers51020
Channel multipliers51020

The bot keeps existing entries if your tier changes. It blocks new entries after the current tier limit is reached.

Set Up Your First XP Track

  1. Run /xp config in your server.
  2. Select Message or Voice.
  3. Press the on/off button to enable that track.
  4. Open Announcement and choose where level-up notices should go.
  5. Set a global multiplier if you want something other than 1.0x.
  6. Add level rewards if members should receive roles as they progress.
  7. Return with Go Back when finished. Each change saves immediately.

Repeat these steps for the other track when needed. You can run /xp config again at any time. Its buttons expire after 10 minutes, so run the command again if the menu stops responding.

XP Tracks Explained

Message XP

Members earn message XP only when the message track is enabled.

  • Messages must contain at least five characters.
  • Each qualifying message receives a random base amount of XP.
  • Longer messages can receive a small bonus, up to the first 100 characters.
  • Discortics applies a per-member cooldown between message XP awards. Sending many messages quickly does not grant XP for every message.
  • The global, role, and channel multipliers can change the final amount.

Voice XP

Members earn voice XP only when the voice track is enabled. Each completed eligible minute receives a random roll from 1 to 10 XP, then the voice global multiplier is applied.

Voice XP does not use role or channel multipliers. It uses only the voice track's global multiplier.

Global Multiplier

Each track has its own global multiplier. Select Global from the Message track or Multiplier from the Voice track, then send a number from 0.1 to 5.0.

Use 1.0 for normal XP. Use a higher value for an event or a lower value to slow progression. The final multiplier cannot go below 0.1x or above 5.0x.

Configure Level-Up Announcements

Open a track, then select Announcement. Choose one mode:

  • Channel: Send every announcement to one selected channel. Discortics checks that it can send messages and embeds there before saving.
  • Active Channel: Send the announcement to the channel where the member's next normal message is processed.
  • DM: Send the announcement directly to the member.
  • Silent: Do not send an announcement.

Select Edit to set a custom message, then send the text in Discord within five minutes. Type cancel instead to keep the current message. Discortics tries to delete the text you send after reading it.

Leave the custom message blank to use Discortics' default message. Select Preview to see how your current template renders with example values.

Available Message Variables

Use these exact variables in a custom level-up message:

  • {{user.mention}} - Member mention.
  • {{user.username}} - Member username.
  • {{user.id}} - Member ID.
  • {{user.tag}} - Member username and discriminator when available.
  • {{guild.name}} - Server name.
  • {{channel.mention}} - Channel mention.
  • {{type}} - message or voice.
  • {{level.current}} - New level.
  • {{level.next}} - Next level.
  • {{xp.current}} - Current total XP.
  • {{xp.nextLevel}} - Total XP needed for the next level.
  • {{xp.needed}} - XP still needed for the next level.

Add Role Rewards

Role rewards belong to one track. A message reward does not apply to voice levels, and vice versa.

  1. Open /xp config.
  2. Select Message or Voice.
  3. Select Rewards.
  4. Select Add.
  5. Send @Role <level>, such as @Regular 10, within five minutes.

Use Remove to select one or more existing rewards to delete.

Stack Rewards

Stack controls what happens when a member reaches several configured reward levels.

  • On: Discortics keeps every earned reward role for that track.
  • Off: Discortics removes other configured reward roles for that track and keeps only the highest reward the member has reached.

Role changes happen when the member levels up. Changing the reward list does not immediately recalculate every member's roles.

Use Role and Channel Multipliers

Role and channel multipliers affect message XP only. They apply after the message track's global multiplier.

Role Multipliers

  1. Open /xp config.
  2. Select Message.
  3. Under Multi, select Role.
  4. Select Add.
  5. Send @Role <multiplier>, such as @Booster 1.5.

When a member has more than one configured role, Discortics uses the average of those role multipliers. It then combines that result with the global message multiplier.

Channel Multipliers

  1. Open /xp config.
  2. Select Message.
  3. Under Multi, select Channel.
  4. Select Add.
  5. Send #channel <multiplier>, such as #introductions 1.5.

Use a multiplier between 0.1 and 5.0. Select Remove from either multiplier screen to delete saved entries.

Ignore Users, Roles, or Channels

Ignored users, roles, and channels never earn message or voice XP.

  1. Run /xp config.
  2. Select Ignores.
  3. Choose Users, Roles, or Channels.
  4. Select the entries to ignore.

Selecting an entry keeps it ignored. Removing it from the selection allows it to earn XP again. Ignore limits are separate for users, roles, and channels.

View a Rank Card

Run /rank to view your own card, or /rank user:@member to view another member's card.

The card shows both message and voice levels, XP progress toward each next level, and a rank position. The displayed headline rank uses the member's message rank when available, otherwise their voice rank.

At least one XP track must be enabled. A member with no earned XP on either track does not receive a rank card yet.

Set or Reset One Member

These commands require Administrator.

Set XP or a Level

Run /xp set with these options:

  • user: - Member to update.
  • mode: - Choose XP to set total XP or Level to set a level.
  • value: - A whole number of 0 or more.
  • type: - Optional Message, Voice, or Both. Defaults to Both.

Examples:

  • /xp set user:@member mode:XP value:1200 type:Message
  • /xp set user:@member mode:Level value:10 type:Both

Reset One Member

Run /xp reset user:@member type:Both. The optional type: choice is Message, Voice, or Both and defaults to Both.

This resets the selected track to level 0 and 0 XP for that member. It does not remove configured rewards, multipliers, ignores, or announcements.

Reset Module Settings or XP Data

Open /xp config, then select Reset.

You can reset the configuration for Message, Voice, Rewards, Ignores, or Multipliers. Confirm the action before Discortics applies it.

Wipe Message and Wipe Voice permanently remove stored XP progression for every member on that track.

Warning: A data wipe cannot be undone. It removes member progress, not your Levels configuration. Export or record anything you need before confirming.

Dashboard

The Dashboard provides another way to edit the same Levels settings. Open Dashboard -> Levels to configure tracks, announcements, rewards, multipliers, ignores, and resets with a save bar.

The Dashboard reset flow can reset message XP, voice XP, or both at once. It requires a typed confirmation before deleting member progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do message and voice levels combine?

No. They are separate tracks with separate XP, levels, rewards, and rank positions. /rank displays both tracks on one card.

Why did a member not gain message XP?

Check that message XP is enabled, the message has at least five characters, the member is not on cooldown, and the member, one of their roles, or the channel is not ignored.

Why did a member not receive a reward role?

Check that the reward belongs to the track they leveled up on. Then confirm Discortics has Manage Roles and its highest role is above the reward role. Managed integration roles cannot be assigned.

Why did a level-up announcement not appear immediately?

Discortics delivers pending level-up announcements when it processes the member's next normal message. Silent mode never sends a notice. For DM mode, the member must allow DMs from the bot. For channel mode, Discortics needs access to the selected channel.

Can I stop XP in a bot-command channel?

Yes. Add that channel under /xp config -> Ignores -> Channels. It will then block both message and voice XP for the selected channel.

Can I make a Double XP event?

Yes. Set the relevant track's global multiplier to 2.0. Remember to change it back after the event.

Why does a member with several multiplier roles not receive every bonus?

Discortics averages all matching role multipliers, then applies that average once. It does not multiply every matching role multiplier together.
